There is an internet marketing company that is pushing it spiel pretty hard called “Banner Topper”. Banner Topper’s claim to fame is that you can buy a keyword with them and your website will show up on the top of the search results (actually above the search listings) in a banner form.   They say that this avoids all the competition of pay per click and organic.
This sounds like a pretty good deal, if it were really, completely true.   I would be very skeptical of this company.   I have to admit that I have not interfaced with this specific company, but this sounds very similar to past company that I did deal with called American Keywords;  there is a posting in Consumer Rip-off report that associates these two names and gives a few more.
The way it really works is that your website only appears on the top of search results on computers that have downloaded their software.   If your computer does not have this software, then there is no way that you can see anyone’s banner.   Certainly Google or anyone else would never allow someone to display a banner over their website.
So if 100 million computers have this software downloaded on it, then you may actually get some decent results.   But the reality is that very few computers have this software on it so showing up to such a limited audience is hardly worth paying anything for, let alone the steep costs that they seem to be quoting.
I think the old adage: “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” definitely applies.   However there is another old adage that could come into play: “there is a sucker born every minute”.
